K-Tsuru Projector Lift

Niseko, Hokkaido

THE STORY

Introduction

The client wanted a discreet yet high quality home cinema solution that wouldn’t detract from their living space. Aesthetics were paramount – everything in the room was painted black and all the technology had to disappear when not in use.

From the outset, the vision was clear: to seamlessly integrate a hidden projector and in-ceiling speakers to create an entertainment system that balanced functionality with design.

This project shows what’s possible with the right combination of careful planning, problem solving and attention to detail. From overcoming construction challenges to achieving a seamless end result, this installation is a great example of how we work behind the scenes to bring the client’s ideas to life.

SYSTEM DETAILS

The System

This project features a Future Automation motorized projector lift, custom-built and painted black to blend seamlessly with the room’s design. A BenQ 4K projector with 3300-lumen brightness ensures stunning visuals even in daylight, while its built-in Android TV provides access to apps like Netflix and YouTube. The entire setup is automated—when the projector is turned on, the lift automatically lowers, creating a hassle-free viewing experience.

For an immersive audio experience, we integrated a Sonos audio system paired with Triad in-ceiling speakers. The system allows for seamless audio playback, whether watching movies or playing music throughout the home on other Sonos speakers.

BEHIND THE SCENES

CONSTRUCTION

The client had originally requested a projector lift during the construction phase of the property, but was told it would be too difficult or simply not possible in Japan.

Working around an existing structure is never easy and this installation presented its fair share of challenges. We had to make sure there was enough space in the ceiling for the projector lift, while also getting the projection distance just right for the screen size.

During the installation, we encountered water pipes in the ceiling space that interfered with the planned lift position. This required some careful adjustments to maintain image quality and screen size without compromising the final look.

We took extra care throughout the process to protect the wooden floors, minimise dust and keep the room clean. Any wood or plasterboard we had to cut was colour-matched with , and we repainted the entire ceiling slats to ensure a seamless finish.

To make the projector lift disappear completely when retracted, we carefully cut and attached the ceiling slats to the bottom of the lift. Aligning them was tricky – we needed to leave just enough clearance for the lift to close smoothly, but not so much that it would attract attention. It was a delicate balance, but we think the result speaks for itself.
